Ski to Sea:
A Local Tradition of Adventure

Every Memorial Day weekend, the Pacific Northwest’s most iconic relay race kicks off with a cannon blast at the snowy peak of Mt. Baker—and finishes at the salty shores of Bellingham Bay. It’s called Ski to Sea, and it’s part race, part festival, and all-out community celebration.

First run in 1973, Ski to Sea is a seven-leg relay that pays tribute to Whatcom County’s incredible landscape—from mountain slopes to forest trails, farmland roads to open water. Hundreds of teams from around the region (and the world!) gather each year to test their endurance, teamwork, and sense of fun.

The Race: 93 Miles, 7 Legs, Endless Stories

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Cross-Country Skiing (Mt. Baker)
A fast-paced start on the snowy trails.

  • Downhill Ski/Snowboard (Mt. Baker Ski Area)
Racers descend the mountain in style and speed.

  • Running (Mt. Baker to Shuksan DOT Station)
A steep downhill run through alpine forests.

  • Road Biking (Shuksan to Everson)
Cyclists take on winding roads and scenic views.

  • Canoe (Nooksack River)
Two teammates navigate the twists and currents of the Nooksack.

  • Cyclocross Bike (Ferndale to Bellingham)
A mix of pavement, gravel, trails, and barriers—and mud.

  • Sea Kayak (Bellingham Bay)
A final push across open water to the finish line.
